ExxonMobil Egypt participates in Region Unified Football Cup of the Special Olympics

CAIRO — Continuing its community investment efforts, ExxonMobil Egypt has contributed to the North Africa Region Unified Football Cup (World Cup Qualifiers) of the Special Olympics, which is held in Cairo on February 14-20, and is organized by the Egyptian Federal Association for Intellectual Disabilities (Special Olympics Egypt). The event is organized under the auspices of Youth Minister Khaled Abdel Aziz and Sports Minister Taher Abu Zeid.

Through its suppliers and vendors, On the Run service stations distribute largequantities of food products to the participants and the public

As for ExxonMobil Egypt’s participation in the activities in place, Nihad Shelbaya, Head of Public and Government Affairs at ExxonMobil Egypt, said: “ExxonMobil Egypt believes in the right for all to a decent life. Therefore, we are keen on taking part in this event, which sheds light on the intellectual abilities and physical skills that people with special needs possess qualifying them to compete in international championships. It is also a real opportunity for those young people to have a role in the society, in addition to developing their potentials to become more interactive with their community.”

It is noteworthy that ExxonMobil Egypt is providing financial support for 600 players and volunteers in the World Cup Qualifiers. Moreover, the company’s contribution covers accommodation expenses for participants in the Regional Youth Conference of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), is held in parallel with the North Africa Region Unified Football Cup with 15 Arab countries taking part. Each country is represented by a Special Olympics athlete.

Ms. Shelbaya also voiced her delight to have On the Run chain (owned by ExxonMobil) take on a generous initiative through its suppliers and vendors, distributing large quantities of food products to the participants and the public for the whole duration of the event.

Teams from 6 Arab countries: Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Djibouti are participating in the event. Each team comprises 18 players, including Special Olympics and able-bodied athletes. Winning teams will qualify for the Unified Football Cup Malaysia 2014.
