The Cairo League of Arab States hosted the opening of the conference with the attendance of Minister of Investment, Ashraf Salman; Head of Women, Family & Childhood Department for the Arab League, Enas Mekawy; Founder and President of UnitedSuccess, Mrs. Corinne Heijn; and on behalf of Ms. Nihad Shelbaya Public and Government Affairs Manager at ExxonMobil Egypt, Ms. Malak Wahba Public Affairs Specialist attended the conference, and President of Business Women of Egypt 21 Association, Yomna El-Sheridy.
During the speech delivered on behalf of Ms. Nihad Shelbaya, Ms. Wahba expressed the honor in participating in such an important event which gathered a distinguished group of leaders and experts. “It is really inspiring to see this important participation of successful women and their perseverant pursuit in achieving professional goals and ambitions,” Ms. Shelbaya said. “As for ExxonMobil’s sponsorship for the conference, it stems from our belief in its goals of achieving interactive communication between participants, exchanging success stories and professional experience, especially in facing crises and in securing the funding required for the SMEs, in addition to effective outreach as well as knowledge exchange.”
Having a long history of community initiatives that promote the economic opportunities of women all over the world, ExxonMobil launched the Women's Economic Opportunity Initiative in 2005, which aims to promote women as a catalyst for social and economic change in the society. “For ten years, ExxonMobil has carried out a number of initiatives in various countries, such as Ishraq, a program designed for girls in cooperation with Save the Children Foundation in the rural areas of Upper Egypt. Also, ExxonMobil hosted several workshops in Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE within the scope of the Global Women in Management Program, which aims to promote technical and leadership capabilities of women,” she added.
Ms. Shelbaya affirmed ExxonMobil’s belief that empowering women is considered to be a very effective method to ensure social and economic growth in local and international communities, as when women progress, the whole world advances along.
According to Ms. El-Sheridy, President of the Business Women of Egypt 21 Association, the conference covered three main topics, namely creating opportunities through economic crises, seeking unconventional ways to develop private business in the field of SMEs and the third promotes female leaders as an influential force in decision and policy-making.
The conference witnessed the participation of 150 prominent Egyptian, Arab and foreign female investors and representatives of 16 countries around the world, including Egypt, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Kenya, South Africa, the USA, and Sweden, and Arab countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia.
